June 2011 - Real Estate industry leaders have long discussed the inclusion of real estate in business education since the Alberta Real Estate Foundation formed in 1991. As part of its twentieth anniversary this year, the Foundation is proud to contribute $300,000 to finalize the Melton Chair in Real Estate at the University of Alberta.
There has been a history of partnership between the two organizations. In 2007, the Foundation approved $500,000 as a five-year commitment to support the creation of real estate courses by the University of Alberta School of Business. This puts the Foundation’s total donation at $800,000 to date. Richard Parker, Interim Executive Director states, “The School of Business has been working closely with the Alberta Real Estate Foundation building programs and courses to educate the next generation of leaders in the real estate industry.”
The Foundation’s contribution is the final amount required by the University to confirm the 3 million dollar commitment required for the Melton Chair in Real Estate. University Dean Mike Percy states, “Putting together the three million dollars we needed has taken less than two years making it one of the quickest chairs we have ever created. This is a great example of what is possible when there is support from the Real Estate industry, the Alberta Real Estate Foundation, the School of Business and our business students.”
The University of Alberta recently announced David Dale-Johnson as the Stan Melton Chair in Real Estate. His focus will be on the school’s expansion of the Real Estate curriculum offered to business students. Paul McElhone, Executive Director of the School of Retailing said, “The creation of the Melton Chair in Real Estate recognizes the importance of real estate as a discipline within our student curriculum and the value of connecting students to career opportunities in the real estate industry.”
