Foundation Funds Southlands Crossing In Medicine Hat

Southlands Crossing, Medicine Hat, Alberta

February 2010 – The Medicine Hat Real Estate Board recently celebrated the opening of Southlands Crossing, an affordable housing complex in their community.  The project was a partnership with the Medicine Hat Community Housing Society. This is the fourth affordable housing project that REALTORS® from the Medicine Hat Real Estate Board have helped develop for their community.

The Alberta Real Estate Foundation contributed $75,000 to the project along with a $25,000 contribution from the Medicine Hat Real Estate Board.  The $100,000 contribution from both real estate organizations was the largest financial commitment to the Southlands Crossing project.

The Southlands Crossing project has 50 affordable one or two bedroom rental units in seven buildings. Each building has either six or eight apartments and the ground floor units are all built for accessibility. In addition, the project includes landscaping and trees which bring additional warmth and charm to this attractive housing complex. The complex was officially opened in October 2009.

Ric Carrier, Executive Officer, Medicine Hat Real Estate Board presents a cheque for $100,000 to Ron Chaykowski, Vice President of the Medicine Hat Community Housing Society.

Welcome to the Crowsnest Pass

December 2009 -Thanks to an Alberta Real Estate Foundation initiative to fund the Crowsnest Conservation Society Real Estate Professionals and buyers looking for property in the Crowsnest Pass have a new resource to inform them about development in this beautiful part of Alberta known for its recreational opportunities.

The brochure, Crowsnest Pass: Stewardship for Sustainability, synthesizes topics of importance for potential homebuyers in the area, including:

  • Living With Wildlife
  • Bear Smart
  • Wildlife Corridors around Highway 3 and the Railroad
  • Connecting With Nature
  • Responsible Recreation

“Through the generous support of the Alberta Real Estate Foundation, this project got off the ground” says Crowsnest Conservation Program Manager, Jenice Smith. “The financial support allowed us to hire a professional graphic designer and print numerous copies of the brochure for distribution through local REALTORS®.”

The brochure articulates a set of principles for appropriate development that respects the community’s economic, environmental and cultural needs based upon feedback from a number of community stakeholders. The Stewardship for Sustainability brochure is a tool for Real Estate Professionals to pass on to their clients that highlights community values that attract clients to the area. It also sends a message of maintaining those values for long-term community viability and sustainability.
