First Nation students who are transitioning from reserve communities to urban centers for post-secondary education face unique challenges. From culture shock and isolation to financial difficulties and housing instability— these are deterrents to pursuing higher education. Our Nation Student Housing aims to address these housing barriers by providing a holistic support system rooted in traditional Indigenous ways, fostering a nurturing and culturally-appropriate environment for these students.
The goals of this project are to enable Our Nation Student Housing to scale appropriately by conducting comprehensive opportunity and feasibility assessments against Calgary's current housing market and the broader economic conditions in Alberta and Canada. These assessments will validate the demand for ONSH's services, identify potential risks and opportunities within the local housing environment, and inform a strategic plan for sustainable growth. This project will also help determine what housing options and direction ONSH will take (e.g. single detached, duplexes, small complex, Co-op housing or any combination of). By understanding the specific needs and challenges faced by Indigenous students seeking post-secondary education within Calgary, as well as the real estate and economic landscape, ONSH can develop targeted strategies to secure funding, optimize operations, and expand its support network. Ensuring the organization's long-term success and overall improving the housing market by providing housing to this underutilized market.
