Growing Ecosystem Economy Knowledge

Website

Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) is an emerging market with the potential to incentivize sustainable land stewardship activities by compensating property owners for the services the land provides, such as flood mitigation, carbon sequestration, or water purification.

As buyers, sellers, leasers, developers, managers, and stewards of the land, real estate professionals play a critical role in sharing knowledge with their clients about the transaction and the overall management of the property. This project will develop tools, in-depth materials, and professional development training through an online course to support real estate and related professionals, and rural municipalities and landowners in identifying the value of the ecosystem services on a property in order to access the PES market.

As an Alberta-based organization with stakeholders province-wide, the Agroforestry and Woodlot Extension Society seeks to build capacity and share knowledge about the PES market throughout Alberta’s communities.
